About the event

Impact investing spans across all asset classes, yet its application in listed equities raises particular questions.

The Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) offers a comprehensive guideline specifically for impact investing in listed equities. This resource provides practical tools and recommendations for implementing an impact strategy in this domain, while also clarifying the distinctions between impact investing and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) approaches.

Join us at our SFG office to learn more about impact investing in listed equities with Sean Gilbert, Chief Investor Network Officer at the GIIN. He will provide some background information about the guidelines as well as some practical examples.

Let’s prime the system for change together: an interactive workshop

Within the sustainable finance community, many practitioners aspire to drive environmental and social change in both their professional and personal contexts. In a complex and constantly changing world, that is a demanding task. In our lives, work and our communities, we find ourselves facing challenges that can leave us feeling stuck and hamper us from bringing the changes we wish to see. While there are no straightforward solutions, paying attention to our relationships with one another and being curious about the underlying patterns that connect our issues, both the seen and the unseen, is vital in creating the conditions for a healthier future for all of us, indeed in priming the system for change.

To explore these perspectives, SFG invites you to participate in an interactive conversation format following the Warm Data Lab (WDL) practice established by Nora Bateson. These experiences have been described as a “kaleidoscope of conversation”, packed with enriching stories, laughter, and insight. They nourish the soul, transform the way we approach work, life, and our communities, and ultimately, create space for new relationships to flourish.

When: Thursday, March 7, 2024, 17:30-19:30

Where: SFG Office

Who: Everyone is welcome, from all ages and backgrounds, and we encourage you to bring a colleague, friend, or family member. Participation is not dependent on knowledge or skill. WDLs are an open forum for learning and discovery. Participants are invited to step out of the familiar labels and scripts such as CEO, service user, and employee, delving into mutual learning and the intricate complexity of their identities.

Why:

  • Connection: Connect with people who care about the planet and society in a format that is conducive to meaningful interactions.
  • Exploration: Explore multiple issues in a way that helps reveal how they are related.
  • Inspiration: Be inspired by engaging stories, ideas, and surprises that create fertile grounds for change.

Please RSVP here if you intend to join and let us know whether you will be accompanied.

SFG and the World Bank are co-hosting a morning discussion with Orsolya Szekely, Secretary of the World Bank’s Accountability Mechanism. The event will be an opportunity to discuss the importance of accountability mechanisms in the context of scaling up sustainable financing in emerging markets and developing economies, building on the World Bank Accountability Mechanism experience and lessons learned.

Orsolya Székely, a Hungarian national, is the Accountability Mechanism Secretary. The Accountability Mechanism houses the Inspection Panel and the Dispute Resolution Service. Appointed to her position in 2021, soon after the inception of the Accountability Mechanism, she leads the independent function that handles complaints from communities that believe that a World Bank-financed project has and will cause them harm. She serves a single five-year non-renewable term as Secretary.

In establishing the Accountability Mechanism, Ms. Székely applies the lessons she learned from working with a variety of multilateral organizations and in the private sector, in locations across the globe, for more than 20 years. Immediately prior to joining the Accountability Mechanism, Ms. Székely served as the Senior Advisor and Coordinator in the Executive Office of the Secretary General, with responsibility for enhancing good governance, at the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. Ms. Székely also previously worked as senior advisor with communities and high-level stakeholders in India, Myanmar, China, Kyrgyzstan, and Afghanistan, and on projects in Bangladesh and Nepal, among several other positions. Ms. Székely holds a master’s degree in law from the University of Pécs, Hungary and is an accredited mediator.

This is a Building Bridges Community event.

For SFG Members

18h00 //  DEBATE – THE VALUE OF NATURE
Climate risks are increasingly well-integrated into financial analysis and are top of mind for decision-makers globally. However, we will not solve the climate crisis without preserving and regenerating nature. The loss of  natural ecosystems will also have a material impact on portfolios through the companies and countries in which we invest. Right here in Geneva, climate change is impacting our local environment as well.

It is urgent that we understand this challenge, its implications and how we can tackle it urgently and intelligently.

Speakers:

  • Amandine Favier, Head of Sustainable Finance, WWF Switzerland
  • Jean-Gabriel Brunet, Head of the Green Spaces Department, Ville de Genève
  • Fiona Frick, Managing Director, Circe Invest
  • Sandrine Salerno, Director of SFG (Moderator)

  •  Marie-Laure Schaufelberger, President of SFG
  • Alfonso Gomez, Administrative Councillor, Ville de Genève

As the world continues to struggle to find swift and meaningful solutions to tackle the triple crisis of biodiversity loss, climate change and unsustainable development, the role of nature markets is receiving increased global attention. Trying to protect nature by putting a price tag on it is akin to ‘fighting fire with fire’, but many see this as an opportunity to develop high-integrity business activities, markets, and economies. By channelling investment into nature-positive markets we can better protect, invest in, and regenerate nature.

Join another Ideas for Breakfast session featuring two experts from NatureFinance to hear about opportunities and challenges to delivering on the potential upsides of nature markets. The Taskforce on Nature Markets has valued nature markets globally at nearly US$10 trillion.  The Taskforce has identified governance as the underlying ingredient that will determine the failure or success of existing and emerging nature markets – in terms of timely scale, price and impact on people and ecosystems. One topic area will be emerging biodiversity credit markets as an area of growing international interest. The second topic will cover the links between illegal nature markets and legal investment supply chains – a critical area for action given that nature crimes generate US$281 billion annually.
